I recently read a report on your site regarding Guthy-Renker Australia illegally charging consumers' credit cards.
I have just had the same experience!
I recently walked into the Guther-Renky showroom in Sydney to try some of their products. I deliberately went to their showroom as they had put me on their "Automatic Ordering System" in the past. If you call up and order one item they will automatically sign you up for a fresh order every month or two, even if you didn't want this.
So I purchased 2 items and paid by CASH. No credit card was involved. My invoice shows a cash purchase. There is nothing on the invoice that states that I have signed up for any membership. There is a membership box but it is NOT ticked. There are no terms and conditions on the invoice nor anything about signing up for repeat orders. The girl who served me also did not mention anything about repeat orders or a membership for cash sales.
But sure enough, one month later a box arrives at my door. Guthy-Renker had taken it upon themselves to dredge my credit card number out of their records (which I had asked them not to keep in the past) and charged my credit card $130 for a repeat order which I NEVER AUTHORISED!
The last time an Australian consumer posted about this practice Janet Moriaty from Guthey-Renker in New Mexico repied:
"When ordering on the internet you are recieving the items at club membership prices. It states that when you place you items in the shoppping cart on the right hand side of the page that you are becoming a club member and you credit card will be charged every 30 to 60 days, dependingon the product which gives them authorization to send you and charge you for the products, it states it numberous times on the website before you finish your order.
I would suggest the next time you order off the internet to read everything and not just click continue or next."
Well I'm sorry Janet, but I did NOT order from the internet nor did I see ANY documentation stating that I was signing up for any membership or repeat orders. My receipt clearly shows that I paid by cash and I never gave you my credit card details or any authorisation to use it.
I shall be taking this matter to Consumer Affairs in Australia as it is illegal to charge credit cards without the owners consent. This is credit card fraud!
I have already contacted Guthy-Renker Australia about this matter. At first I was told it was my problem and I should have watched their infomercials to know about this practice. Finally they agreed to take the package back but I must post it myself and wait (who knows how long) for a refund.
However this should have NEVER happened in the first place without my approval!
So please be careful with this company. If they EVER get your credit card details, watch out! You will be getting lots of surprises in the mail.
PS: I am happy to provide a copy of my cash receipt to any interested parties.
