I signed up this morning to Australian -Records.com because I wanted to gain access to records which would enable me to trace relatives in Australia. I paid 19.97 by debit card, accessed the site, and found it to be useless.
It was supposed to be possible to claim a refund within seven days if I was dissatisfied with the site. All I had to do was contact customer services by email or telephone. However, when I clicked on the "CONTACT" button, I got nowhere. I tried searching for the company named on my purchase confirmation, interactivebrands, and that was when I came across aucomplaints.com.
I contacted my bank to see whether cancelling my card would stop payment. Although the payment did not show on today's transactions, the adviser was able to tell me that my card had been used today, and a payment of 21.92 would be activated tomorrow. I suspect this is the same company as I have not used my card for anything else today. I suppose I am lucky that a much larger amount was not taken.
