Just wanting to refer you to the Ch 7 report on this date, entitled ‘The Inside Story’ by ‘journalist’ Peter Caldicott.
The report started off as Ch 7 taking the moral high ground about how they refused to surrender to the DIAC ‘censorship’ guide lines, and therefore they did not respond to the open media invitation by DIAC and SERCO to go onsite into the Inverbrackie Detention Centre. The Ch 7 ‘report’ then proceeded to display detainee faces (potentially exposing detainee families in other countries to further persecution or torture) and fabricate a fictional story. It reported that two employees were in fact “detainees”.
Having previously worked at Inverbrackie Detention Centre, I can confirm that the supposed “detainees” are in fact Serco employees. It was reported that these two Non Anglo-Saxon men are detainees, when, in fact they have been long-term employees of Serco, who are responsible for the day to day operations of the centre.
It is an absolute disgrace that your reporter chose to lie outright, rather than subjecting himself to measures that protect detainees. There is no problem with reporting the censorship restrictions- but pretending Serco employees (bearing ERCo badges and 2 way radios) were detainees whom security prevented from speaking to the media? Hypocritical, misleading, and outright disgraceful.
Shame channel 7. Shame. Can you just report the facts next time, rather than fabricating stories in the public interest... clearly there is no real value gained from this.
