As a staff member of Wendy's Supa Sundaes - one of the largest Ice Cream shops in Australia - I have decided after almost 3 years of employment to discuss the rip off that takes place on a day-to-day basis.
The average consumer complains about the prices, and fair enough, but when they learn the product costs, they almost die. I will give you an example. We charge at my store $3.10 for Icy crush. All it is is cordial and water in a cup. The cup costs us $0.20, the cordial per cup averages about $0.02, The straw and lid cost about $0.02 cents each and the water is free. That means the consumer pays $3.10 for an item that costs less than $0.30.
And you think thats bad - wait till you try the hot dog milk shake deal. The average costs of a hotdog with a milkshake is about $1.26 give or take a couple of cents depending where you get your rolls. Now our store pulls in $5.80 from customers - a tidy markup of about $4.50.
Probably the most annoying thing for me though is the fact that Wendy's have set standards in ingredients that are not being followed. For example, our Lemmon fizz smoothy says in the product manual, billboard display and nutritional information pamphlet to use 100% Lemmon Juice. I can name 5 stores in my area that use cordial instead. This is for one reason only - it is dramatically cheaper. However it drastically changes the nutritional information, and the consumer who beleive they are getting a 99% fat free product are getting a lot more fat and callories.
On that note - dont pay $3.00 for the 99% fat free chocollo when you can pay $2.00 for white soft serve that is 97% fat free, or $0.80 cents extra for a large upgrade to a thickshake - its not worth the 195 Ml extra (which is mostly bubbles).
Also, many stores are changing from the high quality spoons and napkins to cheaper alternitaves that are fine except for the fact that today i had a woman come back complaining because the cheap spoon broke in her mouth and cut her tounge. And that is what sparked todays complaint session.
So there you have it - wendys is a rip off, and you got it from a long lasting staff member.
