Customer service - Pricing

Good morning,

I have been a customer of Bing Lee having purchased many appliances over the years. I was seeking to purchase a washing machine and researched prices on line before going to Bing Lee, Erina store on Monday 19 June. I sourced a washing machine that would be suitable for me. It was a Simpson brand 5.5 kg model SWT5541. Bing Lee had it on sale for $459. I also checked the competitors price and the same machine was $444 at Harvey Norman (HN), Erina, only $15 cheaper.

Because of my previous dealings with Bing Lee I decided to go there first and see if they could match the price of HN. I spoke to a female customer service assistant at Bing Lee and asked if they could match HN's price and if so I would be happy to purchase the machine paying cash. I informed the attendant that I was a loyal customer over many years. She told me that it didn't matter that I was a loyal customer and the price of $459 was non negotiable as the machine had been reduced to that price. I advised her of the price of the same machine at HN being $444.

The attendant told me in no short terms to buy from HN then as she could not match that price regardless and that HN was a bigger store that could offer a cheaper purchase price. I insisted that I was prepared to buy the machine if she matched the price. She refused and was not prepared to negotiate the price and didn't even confer with the Manager of the store regarding my request. Her attitude was belligerent at best.. I left the store vowing never to purchase any further items from Bing Lee. I purchased the washing machine that day at HN and the customer service was excellent and they even threw in some washing powder.

I was of the opinion that Bing Lee looked after their customers and I was only talking about $15 difference. It would have been a sale! Forget about further purchases ever it was a surprising experience considering the advertising that Bing Lee do on radio and more about customer service and how they promote competitive pricing. I was very disappointed in how I was treated in a non negotiable manner by the female customer service attendant.

No more Bing Lee...
