Disturbing photos of a polygamy sect leader passionately embracing underage girls have been released by a Texas court.
West Texan officials released the photos of Warren Jeffs, former leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in various poses with girls at a child custody following a raid on the sect's compound last month.
The Smoking Gun website claimed that one of the girls the 52-year-old Jeffs is seen to embrace was just 12 years old at the time the photo was taken.
Another set of photos show Jeffs and another girl called Loretta celebrating their "First Anniversary".
Jeffs is currently in a Utah prison after being convicted as an accomplice to rape in the marriage between a 14-year-old girl and her 19-year-old cousin.
In April authorities raided the sect's remote community in Texas and seized more than 450 children after receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be a pregnant and abused teenage wife.
The maker of that call has not yet been located and there are concerns it was a hoax, while the majority of children remain in state custody following the raids.
The troubling photos were released as judges sort through custody hearings for the removed children.
