Debited $99.75 from my checking account! RIP OFF! Bank charges $30 to stop payment! Milton Queensland *EDitor's Suggestions on how to get your money back into your bank account!

This afternoon I went to my local bank and made a deposit. I noticed on my deposit slip that the balance showing was about $100 less than what it should have been. So, of course, as soon as I got home I hopped online and checked out my checking account. Much to my surprise I had a debit of $99.75 that I knew absolutely nothing about.

So, I racked my brain trying to think where in the world I had written a check for $99.75, it seems that that figure should stick out in my mind. Upon further investigation, I saw that the check number was 30000. WHAT? That's definitely not right. So, I flip open my phone and proceed to call the bank.

The nice lady at the bank informed me that it had to be something that I authorized over the phone, in order for them to have my bank account information, as it wasn't charged like a debit, but rather an actual paper check with my name and information printed on it. She asked about all the subscriptions that I have, etc. I assured her that whatever I was subscribed to wasn't $19.95 a month! The memo line of the check said "Monthly Sub Jan - May". Well, if you divide $99.75 by five months, that equals out to $19.95 a month for this phantom subscription. (Can you tell I've racked my brain about this?)

So, the nice lady at the bank encouraged me to come in and fill out the proper paperwork if I really didn't think I authorized the charge on our account. Of course, I was at the bank within fifteen minutes. I knew I hadn't authorized that charge!

That's when the other shoe dropped. The bank would be issuing my $99.75 back into my account, but it would be minus the $30 stop payment fee. WHAT? So, this is my fault? I have to pay the $30?

Great, this is just great! I'm so excited that this scam cost me $30 in unnecessary bank fees! EXCITED, I TELL YOU!
